Anyone who employs a member of staff, provides
property and/or equipment which the general public
has access to, must take steps to provide a SAFE
environment. This includes (amongst others) any form
of electrical equipment. The only way to prove an
electrical appliance is SAFE is to test it with
proper calibrated instruments. By instigating a
proper sequence of safety tests, Landlords, Business
Owners, Duty Holders etc. can provide a defence of
Due Diligence against possible
prosecution.The testing of electrical appliances
is a relatively simple procedure with a certificate
issued on completion. Not all appliances may pass,
in which case repairs can sometimes be carried out.
Very often, appliances fail because they have an out
of date plug fitted (e.g. one that isn't sleeved),
or because they are fitted with an incorrect fuse.
These items are easily resolved on site, but others
such as worn flexes may prove too costly to repair
and it's often more economic to replace the
appliance.
The test should be carried out annually at most
types of property. There are exceptions, graded
according to risk, and there are different
frequencies depending on the type of equipment
(portable/movable/hand-held etc.). If appliances
have no plug (e.g. they are wired directly into a
socket), certain checks can still be carried out -
even if they are sometimes only visual.
This survey covers up to 20 appliances and includes
a free visual electrical safety survey of your
domestic property.
EPH Services keeps a record of all Appliance
Tests and will notify you in good time for the
following year.
